On top of that some pieces may not be so difficult technically but require extreme musicality whereas other pieces may be more technically demanding but the level of musicianship required is not so extreme.ĭespite their subjectivity, the grades in repertoire are still useful. At the same time it is impossible to compare the difficulty of individual skills, for example it is impossible to say whether grand détaché is more difficult than spiccato or whether spiccato is more difficult than shifting between the 3rd and 5th positions. Some skills are inevitably taught earlier than others, for example on the string bowing is taught before off the string strokes or shifting after the first position.
The difficulty of the piece does not depend on the grade the piece is, but rather on the technical skills and the level of musicality and musicianship needed for the execution of the piece. The grades of the musical pieces should not be understood as the difficulty ranking but rather as the levels of technical and musical maturity of the student.
